Friday Training

Hi

VeloTron

Out for over an hour on the tandem this morning with Lorena which was fun, nice and sunny when we were out but clouded over later, as usual. Anyway, that went well and we really enjoyed ourselves. I then did an hour of L2 in the evening in manual ergo mode to complete the training for the day, no stress, just plugging steadily away.

Check Your Forks!

Hi

It really is worth checking your forks! This could have been seriously nasty, new forks have now been fitted. This could have been very very serious.

The Ageing Population

Hi

I don't know about you but I think this is just terrible. I've heard of an Ox Roast and a Hog Roast but an OAP Roast is new to me. This is just the wrong way to go about dealing with an ageing population, I'm considering becoming a vegetarian if this is the future ;-)

Me? Cynical?

Hi

Now I wouldn't want to make any accusations but by nature I tend to like things to be right. I just started using one of those shaker bottles which can be used to mix up recovery drinks and the like. The shaker has graduations on it so that you can "measure" the quantity of power before adding the liquid.

Anyway, it's my habit to always weigh the power (50g) using some accurate scales I have and I don't know why but on this occasion, new bottle I guess, I glanced at the scale on the bottle to see how they compared, I was staggered, so staggered I took a picture of it...

Just seems to me that using the scale on the bottle one could easily use a lot more powder per "dose" than maybe one intended or needed to. The powder was from a well known manufacturer and one could reasonably expect it to be suitable for use in the bottle in question. I may be wrong, but it's work checking.

UK Roads!

Hi

Just in case you were wondering what we pay our road tax for, it's so that we can drive/ride on such well maintained and safe roads.

Wouldn't you just love to go over this with a nice new carbon wheelset?

Exploding Turbo Tyre! - Friday Training Session

Hi

Absolutely amazing, turbo tyre started to feel a bit lumpy and within minutes there was a slowly growing lump. By the time I got the wheel off it was still growing and about the size of an orange. Managed to grab the camera, snapped it, then BANG! The results are plain to see, ears were ringing for ages, sounded like a gunshot! :-) Amazing experience!

In the beginning there was a swelling...

There was then a loud bang!

More swellings, tyre just disintegrating!

Tuesday (not) Training

Hi

Having done what would have been today's session yesterday there's no training for me tonight and this was planned for good reason. Tonight a colleague of mine, Dr Keith Howells, retired after many years of service and tonight was his leaving get-together which I would not have missed for anything. If you would like to see the pictures I took both at work during the day and in the evening click here.

Regards to all.

Saturday (not) Training

Hi

No cycling for me again today but have been out for a 10 mile walk with Lorena to keep me reasonably active which we both enjoyed. I must admit that at the moment even though I have no real choice in the matter I am enjoying doing other things which I may have neglected somewhat.

Today was an opportunity to fully test out my geotagging setup and it worked brilliantly. I have enclosed below a slideshow of the photographs I took today. When I got home and before uploading them I "geotagged" all the images with the positions they were taken, this is done as a batch process, I had the entire album online within 30 minutes of getting home, I also have the ground track stored with the photographs for future reference, should I need it, I could always load it into a GPS and retrace the route.

If you click the slideshow to go to the album itself as showing you the photographs the album contains a link saying "view map" which will open a Google map with tiny thumbnails of the pictures showing exactly where they were taken, you can click these to open a popup view of the picture showing exactly the scene at the point on the map.

Anyway, I reckon it's rather fun, it's free, and it is going to allow me to better share future rides with others. On the health front this evening I think I may have turned a small corner, I just seem to have lost a bit of that dreadful leg weakness, I'm not getting my hopes up but it would be brilliant if this were finally coming to an end, even my throat soreness seems to have receded a bit. Enjoy the photos, great system, lovely part of the world.

The Fred Whitton Challenge

Hi

Off we go, the first big day of the year!

In all it's hilly glory!

Well, we got round and bettered last year's time. Mark, Peter, John and I rode together and finished in 7:45 which has improved my last year's time by 25 minutes. We had a great ride with no mechanical problems and having decided to stick together we did just that waiting where it was necessary though I kept one eye on last year's splits which I had with me as I was determined not to let a sub 8 hour time elude me as that moves me into the "1st class" category for the first time.

Some of the other guys did stunning times, some well sub 7 hours, in one case 6:10! There are limits to how much one can improve! Hmm.. now maybe if I lost a few pounds!
